For the 27th straight year, the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports has picked All-State Softball teams, and for as many years the Mohawk Valley is well represented.

Tops of the local girls named to one of the five teams are Cooperstown’s pitcher Maria Noto and second baseman Jennifer Flynn. Noto, a junior, led her team to its first trip to the state quarterfinals after winning the league title in unbeaten fashion and the Section III Class C crown in a thriller against Sandy Creek. Noto led the Hawkeyes to a 20-2 record with a 0.15 ERA in 136 innings pitched. She struck out 271 batters while walking just five and hitting just two batters. Noto also batted .418 with five doubles and triples and 31 RBIs. She was rewarded with a berth on the first team for the second straight year.

Flynn, a senior, was second team last year and jumped a spot thanks in large part to superb fielding and a .506 batting average that included 44 runs, 39 hits and 19 RBIs. Flynn completed a rare trifecta by making All-State as she was also named All-State in girls soccer in the fall and girls basketball this past winter. The last local athlete to do that was Poland’s Kara Morrison in 2014.

Class D saw the largest number of local athletes named. Poland’s freshman pitcher Jamie Weakley made the second team with Stockbridge Valley’s senior catcher Tiffany Jacobs, Remsen’s senior shortstop Hailey Murray made the third team and Poland teammates Mikayla Blumenstock (sr. catcher) and Jordan Batson (jr., pitcher) and West Canada Valley’s freshman shortstop Taylor Zaino made the fourth team along with Hamilton senior Kaitlyn Janczuk. Batson and Blumenstock were also third team in 2015 and Jacobs and Janczuk were on the fourth team in 2015.

Class A had the next best showing for local girls as two made it from Oneida and one from Whitesboro. Senior catcher Morgan Sgarlata made the third team and teammate Hannah Begay, a senior third baseman, made the seventh team. Sgarlata made the fourth team last year. Whitesboro’s senior outfielder Jessica Sardina made the seventh team.

In Class B, only Adirondack’s Marissa McIntyre made the team. The senior pitcher was named to the third team. In Class AA, Proctor’s senior pitcher Alanna Phillips made the seventh team and was the only area girl named.
