OCC to Host Section 3 Wrestling Championships

Since November local wrestlers have hit the mats pouring out their blood, sweat and tears with one goal in mind, a trip to Albany. Albany is the host of the New York State High School Athletic Association’s Wrestling Championship. The wrestlers who will go to the State Championships will be decided this Saturday when Onondaga Community College hosts the Section III Championships at SRC Arena.

Preliminary rounds of wrestling begin at 10am and the Championship matches are slated for 8pm. This full day event has a $7 admission at the door. Division 1 (Class A & AA) will wrestle on two mats, and Division 2 (Class B-D) will wrestle on six mats.

In Division I, some local wrestlers have chances to take home a Section III title, including brothers Kelan and Ian McKenna from New Hartford. Kelan (28-2), a senior, is a 3-time Section Champion will try for a 4-peat in the 113-pound weight class and is the #1 seed. Ian, a sophomore, came away with a title last year as a 113 pounder and this year is a favorite to come home with 120 pound crown, as he is the a #1 seed also. Some of the McKenna brothers teammates will try to join them on the podium, as Kyle Kuty (26-5) is the #2 seed in the 182 weight class, and Dan Tauroney (26-11) is seeded #3 in the 113 pound weight class. Also joining them in Syracuse will be Billy Winn who will be competing in the 106-pound weight class.

Whitesboro will be sending eight wrestlers to the Division 1 Championship. Senior, Nick Giruzzi (14-7) who has battled injuries the season is seeded fifth and will try to bring home the gold in the 285-pound weight class. Accompanying Giruzzi will be another senior, Devin Hook (5-6), who also suffered an early season injury but has had a successful end of the season with a second place finish at Class A’s, last weekend. Juniors, DeShawn Yearby (15-12) 182 pound weight class; Dominick Dellaposta (19-13), 126 pound weight class, and Aiden Nimey, 145-pound weight will battle through some tough competition to try to get on the podium. These elder statesmen will be joined by freshmen Matt Blum (19-7) in the 106-pound weight class, Eric Burt in the 120-pound weight class and 8th grader, Jeff Robinson (20-10) in the 99-pound weight class.

In Division 2, Adirondack sends three #1 seeded wrestlers to Syracuse. Senior Derek Spann (46-1) is the favorite in the 126 pound weight class, as is Ryan O’Rourke (45-0) in the 132 pound weight class and Joe Hennessey (42-1) in the 182 pound weight class. Joining these top seeds will be Wildcat teammates: Kevin Spann (43-0) and Chris Webster (19-6) in the 106 pound weight class; Sean Banks (38-3) and Keegan Case (28-7) in the 113 pound weight class; Brandon Gaylord (40-5), 120 pound weight class; and Andrew Tanner (41-3) in the 285 pound weight class.

CVA sends two #1 seeded wrestlers to OCC, with Jon Charles (36-5), a sophomore, the favorite in the 99-pound weight class and Tanner Cook (32-2), a junior, the favorite in the 138 pound class. Other members of the Thunder wrestling team looking for a spot on the podium will be: 7th grader Mason Bush (29-8), 99 pounds; Sophomore, Eric Bardo (22-17) 106 pounds; Junior CJ Walz (38-5), 120 pounds; Freshman Hunter Shaut (36-12), 132 pounds; Junior David Bardo (20-12), 138 pounds; Junior Colin Treen (38-7), 152 pounds; Junior Josh Klosner (24-18), 160 pounds; Sophomore Trent Ingraham (27-13), 170 pounds; and Senior Nate Case (39-8), 195 pounds.

Returning State Champions Alex Herringshaw and Hunter Richard from Holland Patent are again the favorites to bring home the gold. Herringshaw, a Senior, will attend West Point Academy in the fall boasts a 39-2 record and is the #1 seed in the Division 2, 170 pound weight class. Richard, a junior, has an impressive 40-2 record and is the top seed in the 145-weight class. Holland Patent also sends TJ Phillpots (26-3) a sophomore in the 132-weight class, Jordan Reinhardt (34-8) a senior in the 220-weight class, and junior Justin Hass who should all be in the mix to get on the podium.
