Longtime Administrator Among Athletic Director of the Year Winners

Mohawk Valley Community College’s Gary Broadhurst has been named one of the winners of the Athletic Director of the Year award for 2015-16.

Broadhurst, who is the Dean of Athletics and Physical Education at MVCC, is one of 28 winners chosen by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He was one of just four awarded in the junior and community college division and will receive the award in a June convention in Dallas, Texas.

Through the 2014-15 academic year,  the Hawks have won 20 NJCAA championships and 62 Region III titles during Broadhurst’s tenure. During that same span, MVCC has 421 All-Americans, 147 individual national champions and six Scholar Athletes of the Year.

This was the second major award for Broadhurst in the past year. On June 15, Broadhurst was presented with the L. William Milller Award, which is given to recognize administrative excellence by the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators.

Broadhurst, who also attended MVCC, has received several other awards during his career, including the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, and was selected by his peers for the inaugural NJCAA Region III Athletic Director of the Year.

Broadhurst, a Sauquoit Valley graduate received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY Cortland. He began at MVCC in 1979 as a technical assistant and worked his way up to Director of Athletics in 1996. He has also been head coach of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s bowling, golf and softball.

Broadhurst has taught in several academic departments and certification courses. He is also recognized by the State Education Department as certified instructor in the state’s coaching certificate curriculum.
