NEW HARTFORD — The New Hartford Spartans received a balanced attack in earning a huge victory Saturday night over rival Whitesboro.

Sophia Murray scored 17 points, Kaia Henderson had 16 and Abby Buchholz hit four 3-pointers on her way to 14 key points as the Spartans completed the sweep of the Warriors and forced a tie for Tri Valley League Colonial Division title.

The Spartans now have won four straight after dropping two of their previous three games.

“We had a little slump in the middle of the season, but we’ve come back and played well lately,” New Hartford head coach Mike Callan said after the victory. “Tonight it was a great high school basketball game … all the way around by both teams.”

After a slow first quarter, the Spartans surged ahead in the second behind six points apiece from Buchholz and Kaitlyn Daley that gave New Hartford a 26-18 advantage at the break.

Whitesboro senior point guard Hannah Scott led all scorers with 18 points. Kelsey Wands and Kiley Snow netted 10 apiece for the Warriors (12-8), who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

Scott and Snow combined for nine points in the third quarter as Whitesboro cut New Hartford’s lead to five heading into the fourth.

The Warriors got as close as 34-33 early in the fourth on consecutive hoops by Scott, but the Spartans went on a quick run to extend the lead. The outcome was still in doubt until Buchholz nailed a big 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining that gave the Spartans a 49-43 advantage that all but sealed the victory.

Whitesboro awaits Wednesday’s sectional meeting, while the Spartans finish out the regular season at Moravia Monday night.
