For the 25th straight year, the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports has selected the All-State Girls Soccer teams and as in every year past the Mohawk Valley has players or coaches honored. The 2016 edition is headlined by Little Falls’ Maria Morotti and Nicole Failing and their coach Sal Marchese.
Little Falls Mounties Nicole Failing.
Senior midfielder Morotti and sophomore forward Failing earned first team honors in Class C and Marchese was named New York State Co-Coach of the Year with Geneseo’s Nick Drollette. Morotti, a repeat pick, and Failing led the Mounties to a second Section III title and this year’s was better as the team beat defending state runner-up Elmira Notre Dame in regional play. LF fell in the state finals to defending champion Port Jefferson, which went on to win the title again. Marchese was named state coach of the year for the second time in four years.
Poland’s Shiane Irwin is a two-time All-State selection.
Also making an All-State First Team from the area were Poland’s Shiane Irwin and Claire Lepper and Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville’s Alexis Romeyn. Coach Tom Basel’s Tornadoes were state runner-up in Class D for the third time in the past four years and Irwin repeated her All-State honors in the process.
Poland Keeper – Claire Lepper.
Others making All-State teams from there were, by Class, New Hartford’s Micaela Honsinger (sixth team in A), Clinton’s Darby D’Angelo (second in B) and Elyse Jackson (fifth in B).
