HOLLAND PATENT – In a battle of Center State Conference Division I leaders, the Clinton Warriors proved superior in Monday’s 4-0 girls soccer victory over Holland Patent.

Senior midfielder Darby D’Angelo scored two goals and Julia Petriekis and Sarah Owens traded setting each other up for goals as the Warriors (3-0, 5-1) took a one-game lead in the division. Clinton controlled the majority of the game with its impressive passing and possession game and were the quicker, more determined team throughout.

“We executed really well off their end line,” Clinton head coach Beth Baker said. “We were using space on the flanks and we had three scoring opportunities from that. We have worked on that and today we did that very well. We need to work on capitalizing. We should’ve scored more, but were not good with our straight-on shots.”

D’Angelo dominated early, keeping the ball consistently in Holland Patent’s side of the field and setting up teammates with scoring opportunities.

“She’s the heart of our team,” Baker said. “She’s now a veteran and we’ve had her with us since eighth grade. She dictates the pace for our entire team. And the great thing about her is that she’s always on. She’s a consistent leader and performer. She’s makes a huge impact on the dynamic of our team.”

With 21:43 remaining in the opening half, D’Angelo’s put the Warriors up 1-0 with a perfectly placed corner kick that tipped off Holland Patent goalkeeper Jensyn Warren’s fingertips and into the left corner of the net.

“I view myself more as a leader this year,” D’Angelo said. “I had to step up and get everyone ready for every game and working toward the same goal. I think we played well and communicated. We know each other’s weaknesses and strengths and play together really well.”

Depite outshooting the Knights 9-3 in the opening half and dominating possession time, Clinton led by just one goal.

“I knew it was going to be tough coming here,” Baker said. “I knew they would play hard. We were up just one goal at half and I told them we needed to work hard and push to get that second and third goals, and then we’d get the fourth … and that’s what happened.”

Clinton doubled its advantage less than 10 minutes into the second half as Owens beat Holland Patent defenders to the ball in the right corner and maneuvered toward the middle. She then slid a perfect ball to Petriekis, who one-timed it into the left corner of the net.

In almost a carbon copy of that goal, Petriekis returned the favor and beat defenders in the left corner and found Owens, who redirected it past Warren with 20:53 remaining. D’Angelo closed out the scoring with 5:37 remaining as she took an accurate pass just outside the 18’ from Emma Storey and drilled it just inside the left post.

“Their midfield got us today,” Holland Patent head coach Josh Olney said. “Darby did a great job seeing the lanes and distributing the ball well. She made switches and facilitated their offense all game. Really their whole team seemed to want it more today.”

Clinton’s defense was just as impressive in turning back Holland Patent’s attempted counter attacks. Sophomore sweeper Elyse Jackson consistently thwarted possible scoring chances by the Knights with aggressive and purposeful defense. Jackson not only had several big clears, she also helped facilitate the offense with accurate passes.

“I just like being aggressive and finding open passes and creating plays for our team,” said Jackson, who is in her second season on varsity. “Today we communicated and played as a team. We have great chemistry and when we work together we’re unstoppable.”

Whenever Holland Patent (2-1, 4-1-1) did get off a quality shot, goalkeeper Lydia Kunz was properly positioned and stopped all nine attempts on goal.

Warren made 11 stops in net for the Golden Knights, who try to get back on track when they host Canastota Wednesday.

“We’ll always look to the next game,” Olney said. “We have to get ready for Canastota and then Whitesboro. … We’ll have to win our other league games and we’ll have to get a win at Clinton. It will be difficult, but I told them if we do that, we can share the league title.”

Clinton is a young, talented squad. The Warriors start just two seniors (D’Angelo and Nora Arancio), but have the speed and skill to challenge in Class B.

“Our goal is to win sectionals,” D’Angelo said. “I definitely think we have what it takes. We’ve really grown together as a team.”
