Dawgs Not So Lucky In Utica, Fall to 1st Place Sox

Utica – The Utica Blue Sox broke open a scoreless game with 2 runs in the home half of the 4th inning at Murnane Field Monday night, and went on to defeat the reigning PGCBL Champion Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, by a score of 5-0.

Kyle Winkler had two extra base hits, sparking the Utica Blue Sox (11-5) to the win over the Diamond Dawgs (7-8).

Winkler had doubles in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs had no answer for starter Brandon Romero, who kept runners off the base paths in his appearance. Romero held the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out one.

Nolan Freeman got the win in relief, running his season record to 2-0. He struck out three, walked one and surrendered nine hits.

Anthony Rupp couldn’t get it done on the rubber for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, taking a loss. He lasted just six innings, walked none, struck out four, and allowed four runs.

The Utica Blue Sox were sparked by Winkler and Mitchell Clandra, who teamed up for four hits and four RBIs.

Utica returns home on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. for a PGCBL Western Division contest against the Newark Pilots. That game can be heard live right at midyorksportsreport.com
