Marcy – Whitesboro opened their 2015-2016 campaign with a tough Holland Patent team. Holland Patent brought in a loaded lineup lead by defending state champions, Alex Herringshaw and Hunter Richard.

The Golden Knights only lost two seniors to graduation from last years roster. They are an experienced team that also added TJ Philpots, a Class C Champion from a year ago and a runner-up in the Division 2 113 pound weight class. Philpots came over from a Herkimer team that dropped wrestling this year.

Whitesboro on the other hand lost four key seniors from last years squad, and come into the season very young. They have a team filled with eighth, ninth and tenth graders who have very little mat time. The future looks bright for the Warriors, but future hope wasn’t enough to go on against a team like Holland Patent tonight.

The meet started out at the 160 pound weight class as Holland Patent’s Terrance Racino, a senior, took on Whitesboro’s Ben Fovel, a freshman. Racino made quick work of the match and pinned Fovel at :34 in the first period.

Holland Patent kept putting six points up on the scoreboard, as they won the 170, 182, 195, and 220 weight classes by either a pin or by forfeit. Making the score 30-0 Golden Knights.

Whitesboro was able to put six of their own on the board after Nick Giruzzi won by forfeit in the 285 pound weight class.

Once the meet rolled over to the lightweights Whitesboro tried to do it’s best and claw its way back. Holland Patent received another six points in the 99 pound weight after a Garret Craft won by forfeit. Whitesboro came right back in the 106 and 113 pound weight classes as Jeff Robinson (106 lbs.), and Matt Blum (113 lbs.) both had quick pins in the first period to make the score 36-18.

The match of the night was in the 120 weight class as Whitesboro’s Eric Burt took on Holland Patent’s Justin Pianella. The match stayed tight throughout three periods. In the final period the score was tied at 2. Burt, the top man, cut Pianella to give him the escape and the one point, making the score 3-2, Pianella, with one minute to go. Burt was able to get in on Pianella and take him down in the closing seconds to secure a 4-3 victory.

Holland Patent swept the rest of the weight classes on the night to win in dominating fashion 63-21. Holland Patent (1-0) travels to Chittenango on Saturday to compete in the Chittenango Duals. Whitesboro (0-1) heads up north to wrestle in the Poland Duals at Poland High School.
