SARATOGA – The Whitestown All-Stars were relentless Sunday, battling back from multiple deficits before finally overtaking Saratoga National 8-7 to win the New York State Section 2 title.

With the victory, Whitestown advances to the New York State Tournament July 23-29 at Penfield Little League Complex (Rochester area). The District 10 champs grabbed a 1-0 series lead with a 4-3 victory over Saratoga Saturday before getting the job done today at the District 11 champions’ home field.

“When we set out to start this right around Father’s day, the main goal is to win districts and anything after that is icing on the cake,” Whitestown head coach Garrett Zyskowski said. “We’ve really shown determination and grit to get to this point. First driving out to Plattsburgh and handling things, and then beating a good Saratoga team, taking the first two from them … I’m very proud how we battled through, didn’t hang our heads and kept going forward.”

That determination helped Sunday as Whitestown trailed 5-2 early and 7-5 after four innings. Whitestown then seized the moment in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs capped by Luke Johnson RBI single driving home Tony Dorozynski with the go-ahead run.

Saratoga didn’t go down easily, putting runners on first and second, but Whitestown closed it out as Lucas Tucker fielded a ball at third and threw to Tyler Thorngren for the game-ending forceout at second.

Dorozynski had a hit and scored three runs, while Mike Stilwell had three hits and earned the win with five strong innings in relief.

This is the third Whitestown team to qualify for the state tournament. The program also made it in 2006 and 2014.
