Utica – The Utica Lady Knicks 17-u AAU Basketball Team recently returned from a strong showing at the US Junior National / Nike Championship Tournament in Washington D.C.
The Lady Knicks program, which fielded 6 teams in 2018 from the 6th grade level through and including the 11th grade level, is a decades old youth program dedicated to the advancement of competitive girl’s basketball in the Central New York area. Lady Knicks players often receive strong recruiting attention from college coaches from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions.
The teams play the majority of their games in AAU style tournaments during the Spring and Summer months, in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
In Washington, D.C., the Lady Knicks 17-u team was led by local incoming high school seniors Molly Williams (Waterville), Kayla Usborne (Madison) , Olivia Langdon (Little Falls) Alana Ferri (Herkimer) and Alexis Perrone (Little Falls). The younger members of the Knicks 17-u squad are Sophia Murray (New Hartford) , Leandra Paul (Camden) , Savannah Sommer (CVA) and Caitlin Snyder (Utica Notre Dame).
The Lady Knicks played against teams from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Quebec (Canada) and New Jersey. In one particular game of interest in Washington, the 17-u team showed great heart and determination. Trailing the Carolina Elite by as much as 22-1, the Lady Knicks made multiple second half runs but still trailed 39-23 with just over 6 minutes remaining. The team ended the game on an amazing 20-2 run to win 43-41. Olivia Langdon made the go ahead basket with about 20 seconds remaining. Molly Williams was crucial during the final run attacking the basket while Caitlin Snyder had 2 three point baskets in the last few minutes to help seal the victory.
The Lady Knicks 9th grade team is playing in the 16U portion of the Nike Championship Tournament in Washington this week.
